Tea & Coffee packaging illustrations for Black Cat

Client

Black Cat

We’ve been lucky to work with Black Cat, a well-known Norwegian coffee and tea company, for several years. Founded in 1905, Black Cat has been an important part of Oslo’s coffee scene, known for its focus on quality and sustainability. Working closely with the Molberger agency, we’ve enjoyed creating illustrations for their packaging.

One of the best parts of working with a brand like this is seeing the seasons and celebrations come to life through design. Over the years, we’ve made seasonal packaging for them, including designs for summer, Christmas, and Easter. We also created a special Japanese-themed series and handled the layout as well as the illustration. The goal has always been to make each design feel unique to the season, while still clearly being part of the Black Cat brand.

Each project has been a fun and meaningful way to combine creativity with Black Cat’s strong focus on quality and tradition.

The Japanese tea collection features illustrations inspired by traditional woodblock prints, with animal motifs that hold significant cultural value in Japan. It was important that the design communicates this connection to Japanese heritage. The design tells a story of culture and tradition, while still providing the necessary information in a subtle, refined way. This design offers endless possibilities for expanding the collection. We are happy to say this design took home the Gold prize at Visuelt!

For the Christmas packaging, we designed a festive pattern that comes in two colorways. The design features gold foil accents, to spark that Christmas feeling. With its flexible structure, the pattern adapts easily to various package formats, capturing the joyful spirit of the season.

Black Cat Coffee and Tea House is a traditional, family-owned business with over 110 years of experience. With their expertise, they help customers find the right products and solutions based on individual tastes and needs.

The story of Black Cat dates back to 1905, when the small shop Grændsen Kaffe & Theforretning opened in one of Oslo’s busiest shopping streets. It quickly became the city’s most popular and exclusive coffee and tea shop. The image of a black cat in the window became iconic, and the shop was soon known as "Den Sorte Katta."

Coffee and tea play many roles in life – whether as a morning ritual, a much-needed mid-day break, or a reason to meet a friend. Norwegians, in particular, are known for being hard coffee drinkers, with many occasions throughout the day when a cup of coffee is essential – us included! The quality of the product is key to making these moments special.

Easter is peak season for coffee, so we were thrilled when Black Cat asked us to create an Easter pattern for them, featuring bright pastels and deep, rich tones. Most recently, they also entrusted us with illustrating a new Christmas collection, showcasing quiet snow-covered houses immersed in a serene, snowy landscape.
