Norwegian classics series for Gyldendal

Client

Gyldendal Forlag

Redesigning these Norwegian classics for Gyldendal, we looked to the time in which they were first published. Understanding their cultural and historical context helped us create covers that feel true to their origins—while making them relevant for today’s readers.

We used a contemporary colour palette to bring freshness and help the covers stand out on the shelves, while still referencing their roots.

By combining historical inspiration with modern design, we’ve aimed to connect past and present, and invite new readers to discover these Norwegian classics.

Bauhaus has always been a key influence. Its bold, functional approach still shapes how we think and work

Bauhaus has always been a key influence. Its bold, functional approach still shapes how we think and work. For the covers of these reissued titles, we looked to the intricate work of Anni Albers and the textiles of the Wiener Werkstätte. They reflect a design language that feels both classic and modern — drawing on their patterns, structure, and the simplicity of Bauhaus design. The result is a series of covers that balance historical context with a contemporary look.

Cora Sandel wrote with quiet strength and precision, capturing the complexities of women’s lives in the early 20th century. Her novels are celebrated for their depth, clarity and emotional power.

Alexander Kielland was one of Norway’s most important realist writers, known for his sharp social criticism and elegant prose. His work often challenged the norms of his time, making him a key voice in 19th-century literature.
